"Artist in Residence at Manza"

Call for participating artists

ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort has been running the "Artist in Residence at Manza" program since 2022 to support artists who stay at the resort and continue their creative endeavors.

This program provides accommodation in Onna Village, the resort's base town, a scenic spot surrounded by coral reefs, as well as exhibition and production space.

This space, far removed from everyday life, where you can feel the rich nature in the unique subtropical climate and experience the unique culture and history of the Ryukyu Kingdom, will surely generate new inspiration and contribute to more creative production activities. We hope that you will rediscover the charm of Okinawa and Onna Village and spread the word about it through your works.

Overview of "Artist in Residence at Manza"

We are looking for artists who will stay and create at our resort.

The gallery space next to the lobby will be open to the public and can be used as a place to present your work in any genre, including painting, sculpture, crafts, and photography. We will also consult with you about creative activities in the gallery space. Guest rooms are available for your stay. We will support your creative activities with a comfortable stay that only a hotel can offer. During your stay, we can also provide an opportunity for interaction with the local community, including staff and guests, and for the artists themselves to hold talks, to widely introduce their activities. Please feel free to express your impressions of "Okinawa."

[Application period] Applications will be accepted from Thursday, September 1, 2022.

[Accommodation] ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort (Onna Village, Okinawa Prefecture)

[Stay period] 1 month or more (negotiable)

[Eligibility and conditions for application]

Engaged in creative and production activities as an artist or creator.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and a resident of Japan, and be able to submit a copy of their identification when applying.

You must be staying at the ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort and be able to transfer your work to the gallery space for one month or more. (Stay period must be one month or more) *We also accept consultations regarding exhibition and sales.

We have one gallery space that can be used for exhibitions, workshops, and social gatherings, and you must abide by the rules.

Being able to do everything related to production and life on your own.

Be responsible for setting up and taking down all exhibits and events.

Public relations cooperation: Please disseminate information about your activities during the residency (media: website, various social media, etc.).

You will be able to donate at least one piece of artwork created during your stay to the resort.

Able to cooperate and build good relationships with hotel staff and guests.

Be in good health.

Activities must be carried out with due consideration for preventing the spread of infectious diseases, and participants must be able to cooperate with testing etc. (at their own expense) if necessary.

[Costs and other details]

Production and equipment costs: Expenses related to the production of the work will be borne by the participant.

Accommodation (one month or more, breakfast included): One guest room will be provided free of charge during the period of production and exhibition.

*Guest rooms cannot be specified.

As a general rule, participants must participate in the program alone; family members or production assistants cannot be brought along or stay with them.

Living expenses: Utilities such as water, electricity, and gas, as well as items necessary for your stay (bedding, toiletries, and other amenities) will be provided on the same basis as in a regular guest room.

Transportation costs: Travel expenses to Okinawa, transportation between the airport and the hotel, and other transportation costs for research will be borne by the participant.

We plan to invite one artist for each reception.

[Exhibition space]

The gallery next to the hotel lobby will be provided as exhibition space.

You are free to use the space as you wish, but you cannot move or remove any existing fixtures.

[Regarding production space]

We also accept consultations regarding production in a gallery (open studio).

In principle, any work that produces noise is not permitted.

In the event of stains caused by art supplies or damage caused by tools during the production process, we will charge you the cost of restoring the item to its original state.

2. Second screening (online interview)

For those who pass the first screening, the resort will contact them by email to arrange an online interview (Microsoft Teams). Based on the submitted documents, the online interview (approximately 30 minutes) will be conducted, and the selection will be made by the resort's executives. Applicants will be notified of the results by email within approximately two weeks after the online interview.
