Coral Conservation Program

Learn, protect, and experience coral.
A program where you can enjoy contributing to nature conservation.

In the coral lecture, you will learn in an easy-to-understand way about the current state of coral reefs and environmental issues, as well as discover practical actions we can take to help.
In addition, as part of efforts to address the issue of red soil runoff—one of the major factors negatively impacting coral—you will take part in a hands-on workshop creating an original bracelet using vetiver, a plant cultivated to help prevent soil erosion. This is a fun and engaging way to get involved in environmental conservation.
Combining learning with hands-on crafting, this program is also ideal for children’s independent study projects. Deepen your understanding of nature and take the first step toward protecting our oceans for the future.

About Okinawa's coral

There are approximately 800 species of coral in the world's oceans, and more than 300 of them have been confirmed in the waters off Okinawa. In Onna Village, where our resort is located, many corals such as Favia, Acropora, and Porites are distributed. Corals play an important role as habitats and spawning grounds for fish, as well as as breakwaters protecting the coast, and are also deeply involved in regulating the concentration of carbon dioxide in the ocean. From 1997 to 1998, a large-scale bleaching event occurred due to a global rise in sea surface temperature, and Okinawa's coral reefs were also affected. At the same time, there was a massive outbreak of crown-of-thorns starfish, which feed on corals, and the environment surrounding corals has been deteriorating year by year.

ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort has been involved in the establishment of "Team Chura Coral" since 2003, and since 2005 has been working to conserve coral by eradicating crown-of-thorns starfish, a natural enemy of coral, conducting underwater cleanup activities, and planting coral seedlings. In the summer of 2018, following Onna Village's declaration as the "Coral Village," the world's most coral-friendly village, our resort also planned three programs, the "Coral Conservation Activity Plan," that utilize resort-specific activities to contribute to nature conservation, in order to participate in the village's projects. From June 2021, we will be participating in an international program to conserve coral reefs."Green Fins"I am participating in this program. A portion of the participation fee will be donated to coral reef conservation activities. Please join us for a program where you can contribute to nature conservation while having fun.
