About Okinawa's corals

Approximately 800 species of coral exist in the oceans of the world, with over 300 of these species found in the waters of Okinawa. Many coral species, including Acropora spp., Acropora spp., and Porites coral, are found in Onna Village, where our resort is located. Coral plays an important role as a habitat and spawning ground for fish, as well as a breakwater protecting the coast, and is also deeply involved in regulating carbon dioxide concentrations in the ocean. From 1997 to 1998, a global rise in ocean temperatures caused large-scale bleaching, which also affected Okinawa's coral reefs. At the same time, there was a massive outbreak of crown-of-thorns starfish, which eat coral, and the environment surrounding the coral has been deteriorating year by year.

ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort has been involved in the launch of "Team Chura Sango" since 2003, and since 2005 has been working to conserve coral by eradicating crown-of-thorns starfish, a natural enemy of coral, as well as underwater clean-up activities and planting coral seedlings. In the summer of 2018, Onna Village declared itself the "Coral Village," the most coral-friendly village in the world. In response to this, our resort has also participated in the village's project, and has planned a "Coral Conservation Activity Plan," a three-part program that utilizes activities unique to the resort to contribute to nature conservation. Starting in June 2021, we will be participating in an international program to conserve coral reefs."Green Fins"A portion of the participation fee for this plan will be donated to coral conservation activities. Please join us in this program where you can have fun while contributing to nature conservation.
