Approximately 800 species of coral range over the world and approximately more than 300 species have been identified in the sea of Okinawa. Here in Onna Village, where our resort is located, various species of coral such as Cyphastrea, Acropora and Porites are found. Coral is playing important roles as homes and places to lay eggs for fish, and as barriers to protect beaches, and, moreover, it is also deeply involved in the adjustment of the density of carbon dioxide in the sea.
Between 1997 and 1998, catastrophic damage was caused to the coral by bleaching due to worldwide high water temperature and the coral of Okinawa had also been affected. At the same time, there was a massive occurrence of Acanthaster planci so that the circumstance surrounding the coral got worse year after year.
ANA Intercontinental Manza Beach Resort has been involved in the foundation of “Team Churasango” since 2003. Since 2005, the resort has been working hard to conserve coral by engaging in coral-friendly activities including the extermination of enemy of coral, underwater cleaning and planting coral seedlings. We will continue to engage in the activities to protect coral through collaboration with the local community. Additionally, a portion of our activities proceeds will be donated to this coral conservation program of local community. We invite you to join coral consecration plan which you can enjoy the beauty of coral and contribute to nature conservation.
